Thistlebee's - Examples of Wulsthaube.

While researching 15th and 16th Century Northern European Culture/Clothing and having a love for hats, we have found an interesting hat called the Wulsthaube.

Wulst - literally meaning "bead " and Hauben meaning "cover" in German.

The UNTERHAUBEN (undercap) and WULSTE (which is the bulging part) and the STEUCHLEIN (veil). Looking at portraits, there are many, many versions. Large and small. When taking note of the dates, the size seems to become smaller as time went on.

Although more research and sewing experiments will be needed...We went for the BIG one!! This version is made up of two parts only...for now! It is made of 100% White Cotton Muslin and the Wulst, stuffed with Poly-Fil - is attached to the brim and has a ribbon for adjusting the size. The veil shown in the photo is NOT included.
A note though...the shown veil is 45 x 54 inches. We would not consider this a "period" item, as there are no known examples of this style of hat in order to reproduce it authentically - this is simply our rendition of it.

Please us with any inquiries and include "Thistlebees" in your subject line to help us with spam spotting!
